Così fan Tutte is the most enigmatic of Mozart's operas and, some would say, his most sublime.
The work was commissioned in Vienna in the late summer of 1789 and is about the faithfulness of lovers. This was to be the final collaboration between Mozart and Lorenzo da Ponte (after The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni).
This is the first time that any Mozart opera has been performed in The Opera House, Tunbridge Wells.
Act 1 Two young men, Ferrando and Guglielmo argue with an old friend, Don Alfonso, about the loyalty of their girlfriends. Don Alfonso wagers that the two girls will be unfaithful to them.
Ferrando and Guglielmo, acting on a plan hatched by Don Alfonso, pretend to go off to war then return disguised and try to date each other's girlfriends.
Act 2 The girls, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, after initial resistance but encouraged by their maid, Despina, eventually fall for the deception.
All is finally revealed and forgiven
