Opera on the Lawn 2nd August, 7pm
Tchaikovsky and his Eugene Onegin
Sung in English
Fully costumed production featuring the principal arias from all three acts of Tchaikovsky's most famous, memorable and romantic opera after Pushkin's novel in verse.
Black Tie event preceded by champagne and canapés, on the magnificent lawns of Hotel du Vin the premier hotel in the heart of Tunbridge Wells.
Seated on stage is the character of Tchaikovsky, as an older man, reminiscing about the period in his life when he was writing his most famous opera, Eugene Onegin, based on Alexander Pushkin's novel in verse. As he talks, he reads from letters he wrote and received during that intense period and shares with us the turmoil in his own life that somehow seemed to mirror the turmoil of the characters in the story. As he talks about the opera and how he came to write it, we see and hear the main excerpts from all three acts.
Each aria or ensemble is punctuated by Tchaikovsky's thoughts and feelings and the whole production conveys an intimate sense of the story, the music and the effect it had on Tchaikovsky's life. The main characters are Tatyana, Onegin, Olga, Lensky and Prince Gremin, sung by members of the recent cast of opera by definition's outstanding critically acclaimed full-scale production, together with actor Humphrey Skett as Tchaikovsky.
