Celebrating 10 years in 2012 opera by definition is Kent's only fully integrated professional opera company presenting opera productions, ranging in scale from intimate to grand, and in period from baroque to modern. The common characteristics of all our productions are quality and excellence.

The company employs exceptionally talented singers, musicians and designers and in addition enjoys the benefit of marketing, financial and technical expertise.

opera by definition education delivers education and outreach projects to schools and colleges and holds pre-performance talks. The company is committed to widening the understanding of, and the access to this most inspiring of art forms.

Since our first production, The Magic Flute, opened on Tuesday 10th November 2002 a total audience of 9,660 from ages 5 to 95 have seen the huge variety of our work in the Trinity Theatre, Salomons, The Assembly Hall Theatre, Hotel du Vin and The Opera House in Tunbridge Wells and Finchcocks in Goudhurst, The Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks and The Chequer Mead Theatre in East Grinstead. We have achieved an audience total of 82.9% across all the productions. In addition we have presented in-school workshops to many of our schools in the borough of Tunbridge Wells and many of the children and students from ages 6 to 18 have attended performances of our productions – most notably our staging of Glyndebourne Education's The Magic Flute.

We have been financially supported by The Arts Council, The Big Lottery through Awards for All, TWBC, Fidelity Investments Ltd, J D Wetherspoon, IN4HEALTH and most notably our eight-year sponsorship deal with Principal Investment Management Ltd of Sevenoaks.

The Courier Media Group have remained a consistent and loyal media partner and special thanks go to Tunbridge Wells based Thomson, Snell & Passmore, Deeks Evans and The Freemasons of Tunbridge Wells. Finally the high production values in terms of scenery, lighting and rigging are shared by the generosity of Terry Murphy Scenery, Glyndebourne Production Department and Unusual Rigging.

We have added to the economy of the local area, given employment and training opportunities to many artists, designers, stage managers and technicians and held private opera recitals and charity fund raising opera evenings.

opera by definition also provides specialized corporate events such as opera gala recitals with one to five singers accompanied by just piano and/or string and wind quartet. Solo instrumentalists can also be provided depending on the programme required. We can organize a full evening from finding a venue, planning the catering and organizing staging and lighting.
